TRICHOADENOMA
Trichoadenoma (of Nikolowski) is a rare follicular tumor that some authors consider a neoplastic process, whereas other authors consider it a malformation. These lesions occur most commonly in adults. Clinically, trichoadenoma presents as solitary, slowly growing, grayish nodules measuring up to 1.5 cm in diameter. They are mainly situated on the face and trunk. Histopathologically, a dome-shaped, sharply defined nodule composed of numerous, round to oval, infundibulocystic structures is observed in the dermis. Involvement of the subcutis may be noted in some cases. Infundibulocystic structures are lined by a squamous epithelium with a clear-cut basal layer, spinous zone, and granular layer. They contain corneocytes arranged in a laminated pattern. A conspicuous collagenous stroma often surrounds the tumor cell nests. A subset of cases shows prominent verrucous hyperplasia of the epidermis. Treatment is surgical excision.
